Hard science fiction -- science based fiction that takes science seriously. No phasers / no warp drive / no magical fish that translate your thoughts (sorry Douglas Adams). Andy Weir's The Martian takes science seriously without skimping on drama, pathos and adventure. The martian in The Martian is an astronaut accidentally marooned on Mars who must use his ingenuity to stay alive -- Robinson Crusoe on a much less hospitable desert island. It's a great story with likable characters. Excellent read for students skeptical of the excesses of fiction... students who might be interested in the opposite of The Life of Pi.UPDATE: Ridley Scott will be adapting the novel for film
